PayPal are considered to be "the most trusted merchant for webmasters on the internet". But have you heard the
horror stories ?
PayPal have successfully shattered the lives (and bank accounts) of numerous successful online marketers.
If you do a search for horror stories about PayPal, you'll easily come up with a list of high profile names wh ohave had their PayPal
account closed - for no apparent reason.
Well, PayPal don't just close accounts for any old reason, do they ? No. There is reason and logic to the situations
that they handle, and their chief target for closing accounts is online fraud. But if you (unfortunately)happen
to go through their process, you'd swear blind that they've got the wrong person !
What are PayPal targeting ?
Online Fraud and Money Laundering appear to be the biggest factors that trigger a suspicious warning signal to the people who
work at PayPal. And when the alert goes off, it's hard to follow exactly what will happen next.
If it ever happens to you, you'll never find out that your PayPal account has been suspended until
someone complains that they went to make a payment, and an error message was returned that says "Payment Refused". Or you may be running a
Membership site and collecting monthly payments, only to find out that payments are no longer going through.
You log into your PayPal account to see the message, "Your Account has been Suspended" and will be referred to a Complaint
Resolution page where you'll be asked to produce more identifying information about yourself.
Aside from that fact that this process seems to be a sick joke, you are likely to spend over 8 hours on the phone
attempting to locate someone who knows how to unlock your account. After a week of "No-one can tell you that information, sir. Please call again
later", you might finally run into someone who can help you.
But their help is limited.
If you manage to locate someone in the Escalations Department, and you get a direct email contact, then rest assured that someone
can take your email queries directly. However when you email them make sure you email them every day until you get a response from your
complaint. It takes on average 14 to 20 days for anyone from PayPal to respond to your complaints - even after you have been given an email
address.
There is no guarantee that you will ever see your money ever again. It's in the
terms and conditions that you agreed to: that PayPal has the right to seize any and all of your funds if, in their opinion, you
have committed an offence through their system.
And don't think that they are there to assist you if you experience this situation. Once you've been
"blacklisted" from their site, even if you've done "nothing wrong", then all your identifying information about you within your
PayPal account is also blacklisted.
This PayPal Account blacklisting includes:
-
Your Bank Account that you signed up and verified with PayPal
-
Your Credit Card(s) that you have verified with PayPal
-
Email access you used to your PayPal account
You will no longer be able to use any of these identifying features in any way with PayPal. That is, if you go to purchase a
product or service from someone then you'll need to use a different Credit Card that has never been used in the PayPal
network before.
If you sneakily go and create another PayPal account, then you'll not only need to get another IP Address (perhaps by wiping your
computer hard drive or requesting it from your ISP), but when you create a new PayPal account then you'll need to remember to never use any of
your old email contacts in their system - you'll need to create a new email from a different domain.
Such 'illegal' attempts to get another PayPal account usually end up in despair...
So, why the account limitation ?
"Suspended Accounts" or "Limited Account Access" or "Terminated Accounts"
The list of negative names about this situation can be endless ! In short, you've lost access to your account so no-one can send
ytou money, and you can't send them money.
You will lose any recurring income from things like Membership Sites, and if you are making payments to Membership sites then it
is likely that you will lose access to that Membership as well, if you made the payments through PayPal.
And this is where it hurts the most...
And think about the limitations if you are an Affiliate ?
Most of the popular internet promotions nowdays pay their commissions using PayPal. If you lose your account, then you forfeit
the right to receive those commissions. Companies are shying away from using international cheques nowdays as PayPal (using Mass Pay) seems to be
much easier.
In addition to that, if you want others to promote your site or product for you, and you haven't got a fallback system in place,
then you won't be able to pay any of your affiliates either.
Ever heard of Road Rage? Well a similar condition could be likened to this: Affiliate Rage. People expect to be
paid for their efforts. If you cannot pay your affiliates due to PayPal account closure then you're likely to receive a lot of backlash from your
affiliates.
Here's the Nuts and Bolts
Here's the top few reasons why PayPal limit accounts:
-
Suspicious activity - a transaction may have occurred in ia country that is in the "banned countries" list. Or you
may have holidayed in a "banned country" and simply logged into your PayPal account while on holidays. Boom. Sorry buddy. You're
gone.
-
Unresolved Conflict - someone has purchased from you and you haven't resolved it with the purchaser. If you haven't
received any word from your purchaser, who may have sent several emails to you, this could be due to the increasing rate of SPAM
filter blocking. So make sure that you are 100% contactable from the email that you supply as your Support Contact.
-
Unexplained Increase in Funds - your account may have been blessed with a $50,000 (US) increase in funds over a
short period (around 7 days, for instance.) Although you don't have any customer complaints about purchases,
your account may appear as suspicious due to the sudden increase in funds taken. The way around this is to notify PayPal
prior to running a promotion if you expect your account activity will be vastly different to what it has
been.
